Box exercise Tips on execution..

This is just one of the course options that's available to you :)

In an arena or field where the width is greater than 20m then simply put the jumps centrally and put them 10m apart in a box shape.

In a 20 x 40m arena this CAN be done but you need to put the jumps in the right place. The jumps at the A and C end of the arena need to be approx. 10m apart and the other 2 jumps to be about 8m apart. You can give yourself more space if you use narrower poles too. It’s important that you can enter the box at each corner on a straight line towards the middle of 2 jumps.

Box rules include…..

  1.  Go through a gap before you go over the jump.
  2.  Be headed straight at the jump you’re intending to jump at least 2 strides before you enter the box.
  3.  Canter straight for a stride or two after the jump and then join the outer track of the arena before turning inwards to make your next approach.
  4. If you get on the wrong leg after a jump, come back to trot and regain canter.
  5. Only enter the box and jump if the canter is balanced and together.
  6. If you lose connection, direction or rhythm on approach then go straight for a gap, do not present at a jump.

Tips..

  • Keep regular, rhythmical, connected and balanced.
  • Give yourself time on your approach, keeping wide on the track in between jumps.
  • Be aware that this is a tiring exercise so give yourself breaks.
  • Cross poles are better for training accuracy than straight poles. You can increase height of crosses making jumps narrower as the get higher giving you more space.
  • Vary the lightness of your seat, lightening  between jumps but ensure he’s in front of your leg when in the box.
  • Try look ahead, make a plan and time your turms to perfection.
